Tesla Model Y to Rivian R1T: Our EV Journey and Why We Made the Switch
In 2021, we began our EV journey with a Tesla Model Y. Now, our family has fully transitioned to electric vehicles, with the Rivian R1T replacing the Model Y, aligning with our evolving needs and adventures.
My electric vehicle (EV) journey began in 2021 when we purchased a Tesla Model Y. It was our first step into the EV lifestyle, and three years later, I can confidently say I'm not going back. Since then, my wife has joined the EV revolution by getting an ID.4, making us a fully electric family. But today, I want to share about the newest addition to our EV lineup, which is replacing our trusty Model Y: the Rivian R1T.
Why We Loved Our Tesla Model Y
A Better Driving Experience
The Model Y introduced us to the joy of instant EV torque, responsive handling, and an overall exhilarating driving experience. As our first electric vehicle, its 300+ mile range made it the perfect daily driver in Houston, TX, and a fantastic choice for road trips.
Technology
As a self-proclaimed tech enthusiast, the technology in the Model Y was a huge upgrade from my 2016 Toyota Camry. Over-the-air software updates, live-streaming the car's cameras to my iPhone, and using the car to power household appliances during power outages were just a few perks I enjoyed, even when the car was parked.
Supercharger Access
In 2021, only Teslas had access to the Supercharger network, which heavily influenced our decision to purchase the Model Y.
Why We Sold Our Tesla Model Y
So, why did we decide to sell it? A few key reasons:
Personal Needs and Preferences
Our family has entered an "outdoors" phase, driving on terrains that aren’t always ideal for the Model Y. After several off-road trips, we realized we were pushing the car to its limits. While it offered great features for camping, we weren’t quite ready to sleep in the car.
Evolving EV Market
When we bought the Model Y in 2021, it was the best EV option available. The competition was limited to models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mach-E. But in 2024, the EV market has evolved, and we were eager to explore new brands and technologies—especially with a Rivian R2 delivery on the horizon.
Financial Considerations
Finally, the financial aspect. Two factors tipped the scales:
- Carvana made a great offer for our Model Y, covering the remaining car note and leaving enough to put toward the Rivian.
- Rivian had attractive leasing incentives for the 2023-2024 Gen1 R1T, including a $7,500 EV credit and a $6,000 friends and family discount.
Introducing the Rivian R1T: Our New Adventure Partner
The Rivian R1T is built for adventure with its rugged design and off-road capabilities. If you're seeking outdoor fun, Rivian has you covered.
Storage Solutions
One of the things we loved about the Model Y was the storage, especially with a toddler. You might think switching to a truck would mean sacrificing space, but we were pleasantly surprised. The R1T offers even more with a massive front trunk and a sub-frunk. These compartments handle daily errands and airport runs with ease.
The gear tunnel is another game-changer. It acts as our extra "trunk" space, perfect for large grocery runs or road trips.
Normal Truck People Things
I’m not your average truck guy, so while the R1T has impressive specs like towing capacity and power, I don’t plan on hauling heavy trailers. Instead, it's perfect for daily tasks like school drop-offs, navigating Houston's unpredictable floods, and even powering appliances during outages—thanks to its large battery and numerous outlets.
Functional Quirks
The R1T has some quirky yet useful features:
- A removable camping speaker built into the center console.
- A flashlight in the driver’s door, handy during nighttime adventures.
- An onboard air compressor, useful for inflating tires, soccer balls, and even air mattresses.
It’s Sooooo Comfortable
The R1T offers superior comfort with heated and ventilated seats, a dynamic air suspension, and a smooth ride even on Houston’s pothole-filled roads. It's the little things, like cool air on a 100º summer day, that make a big difference.
Why Leasing the Rivian R1T Made Sense
We financed our Tesla Model Y, but with the R1T, we opted to lease. Here's why:
- EVs evolve quickly, and three years from now, the landscape could look entirely different. Leasing keeps our options open without worrying about depreciation.
- The EV lease credit and friends and family discount made this an attractive offer.
- My monthly lease payment for the R1T is actually lower than my previous Tesla car note.
Comparing the Tesla Model Y and Rivian R1T
It's tough to compare an SUV to a pickup truck, but here are a few standout differences:
Design and Build
Tesla’s minimalist aesthetic worked for us, but tastes change. The R1T offers an elevated design with wood accents, ventilated seats, and overall higher build quality.
Technology
While Rivian has made strides in technology, Tesla is still ahead in areas like route planning and driver assistance. However, Rivian’s infotainment system, complete with Apple Music, Spatial Audio, and Dolby Atmos, is a great experience—when it works.
Driving Experience
The R1T’s dynamic air suspension and seat comfort make it a smoother ride than the Model Y, especially on rougher terrain. This comes at a higher price point, but it’s worth it.
Conclusion: Exciting Adventures Ahead
This next chapter in our EV journey is filled with excitement. We’re planning a road trip to Big Bend National Park and looking forward to all the new adventures that await us with our Rivian R1T. While I never imagined owning a truck, I’m thrilled for what’s to come!
